The Babadook is a 2014 Australian supernatural horror film written and directed by Jennifer Kent. It is her debut feature film, and it won the Academy of Film at Cannes 2014. A widowed mother, Amelia (played by Essie Davis) must fight to retain custody of her son (Noah Wiseman) after he becomes possessed by a monster: The Babadook. In 2014, Jennifer Kent stated she was inspired to make this film because she felt "too scared to see the children's movies I loved as a child" as a result of becoming a mother. In an interview with "The Guardian", Kent said, "I began to think buildings and situations where children were harmed were sometimes created by evil spirits that feed on these fears. The idea that scary things could be inside us and we may not even know it." Several promotional trailers and posters contained the tagline: "Are we all just a little bit crazy?" During development, Kent considered having different versions of the antagonist depending on whether or not it was viewed under normal light or under darkness, but abandoned the idea. The film's Australian premiere was held in Melbourne on 12 May 2014 to coincide with the 2014 Melbourne International Film Festival. It was released in Australia on 29 July 2014. On 4 October, "The Guardian" published an article about the film in which it was stated, "Like Kent’s debut film, "The Babadook" is also semi-autobiographical; she writes that her much-loved cartoonist father grew increasingly distressed when his hobby began to appear much like his son." It was announced in December that the film would receive a limited release in the United States on 3 March 2015. It received an overall positive review from "Entertainment Weekly". The film has a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also has a 38/100 on Metacritic. The film received the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Award for Best Feature Film at the 2016 AACTA Awards. It was nominated for Best Horror at the 2015 Inside Film Awards, but lost to "The Guest". It received three nominations at the 28th Empire Awards, including Best British Film, Best Director (Kent) and Best Newcomer for Essie Davis. At the 21st Screen Actors Guild Awards it was nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.
